How To Ask God For Things:

There’s a school of thought out there that teaches us that we should never pray and ask God for personal things, that we should only pray for others. Now obviously, yes, we should pray for others, but let me assure you, there is absolutely nothing wrong about praying for yourself; as a matter of fact, it’s a vital part of the human experience.

Let’s see what Jesus had to say about this issue.

Ask and keep on asking and it will be given to you…” (Matthew 7:7)

First of all, this verse says “given to YOU” so we know this is about praying for ourselves. This is a very interesting verse, and because it has been interpreted in a certain way down through the years, it remains shrouded in confusion. Why must we “keep on asking?” Are we supposed to just keep nagging God over and over asking for the same thing, twisting his arm until he says “Alright! Alright! Fine, I’ll do it!”?

This never made a lot of sense to me, if God is Almighty, shouldn’t we just need to ask once? We need to keep in mind that the Bible is addressed to the human imagination, so in order to understand these scriptures, we must switch from left brain thinking to right brain thinking and engage our imagination in order to glean the hidden meaning.

We, all of us, are God. We are simply wearing human garments and we are having a human experience. So when we pray, we are not asking some outside source for something, we are asking ourselves. I know this kind of boggles the mind at first, so let me explain.

We need to understand how God creates. God creates by becoming the thing they are creating. So when God said “let there be light” they became the light. So when we create, we become the thing we are creating. “Ask and keep on asking” is not referring to a one time thing, this is a blanket statement for all of our prayers throughout our life, it is a process of asking for something, then asking for something else, then something else and so on and so on.

Knowing that we become the thing we are creating or praying for, then when what we are being told here is that we must ask ourselves how we would feel if we already had the thing we are praying for. Feeling is the secret to manifestation. For example, say you need wisdom for a big decision you have to make. When you pray, ask yourself how you would feel if you had the wisdom you were seeking. You would feel a sense of relief, a sense of calm, you would feel confident because you would know that you’re going to make the right decision. You are becoming relieved, calm and confident because you are becoming what you are praying for, in this case, wisdom.

So this verse, “ask and keep on asking and it will be given to you” means that repeatedly throughout our lives we should be asking ourselves how we would feel if we already had the thing we desire. This is the becoming, this is prayer; and when practiced consistently our lives go from one of begging and asking some outside God for help, to lives that are being transformed from glory to glory.

“And we all, with unveiled face, beholding the glory of the Lord, are being transformed into the same image from one degree of glory to another.” (2nd Corinthians 3:18)

In love and light,
