The Deeper You Dig:
“The one who believes in me, as the scripture has said, from his innermost being shall flow rivers of living water.” (John 7:38)
I remember when my father decided to put in a fresh water well at his property out in the country. He rented all the equipment, selected the location, and then the process began. We drilled down into the earth for several hours, then several more hours, and then dug some more, and…nothing. This went on for days, frustration ensued, and everyone began to wonder if it was even possible to have a well on this property.
My father was a diligent man, he kept at it. He rented some more equipment, and got a more advanced drilling apparatus and just kept on digging deeper, and deeper, and deeper. The other people who were part of this project were losing interest, but my father would not be deterred; and then one Sunday afternoon, low and behold, water began to bubble up out of the ground. Eureka!
I share this story with you because it is a great example of the Hermetic principle “As above, so below.” Our physical world is filled with examples of spiritual laws. Life itself is an allegory of the spiritual reality of things.
Just as one must dig and dig and dig to hit fresh water in the innermost part of the earth, one must dig and dig and dig and dig to hit the rivers of living water in our innermost being.
Persistence.
Jesus shared many parables in regards to this principle which you can find in the New Testament. Luke 18:1-8 and Luke 11:5-13 to name just a few. I’ve discussed these in other posts, so I won’t go into detail here, but please read them when you have the time.
The point is this, we all have this river of living water deep within us, but we must dig. Meditation is the act of digging. It may seem like nothing is happening at first, keep digging. Most people do it a few times and then give up. Be persistent.
It’s sad quite frankly, that so many people give up before they hit the living water; and so what do they do? They end up paying someone else to provide the water for them. My father could have done this, if he had given up, he would have had to pay the city a monthly bill for fresh water, but because he was persistent, he found his own source. This is why we have megachurches today, many people would rather pay someone else for the water, but when you tap into your own source, you have no need for that. Your own river of living water is much more healthy and beneficial than the water that comes from an institution.
Dig.
In love and light,
