The Play of Good and Evil:
“So be subject to God. Resist the devil and he will flee from you.” (James 4:7)
We’d do well to remember that the bible was written by desert dwelling mystics from the East, and they saw reality quite different from those of us in the West. For instance, the Hindus believe that life itself is a divine play which they call “Lila.” It’s a concept that describes the universe as a manifestation of God’s playful energy, rather than being created out of necessity. Lila suggests that creation is a joyous, spontaneous activity of the divine, where the universe is seen as a stage for this divine play.
With this in mind, every good entertaining play tends to feature both good and evil as part of the production. In the Bible, the devil is symbolic of the human ego or false self. So we can see in the above verse, if we make our self subject to God, (by being aware that we are the I AM), then we will be able to resist the ego, and it will flee from us. If our awareness is centered in our divine nature, this creates a space between our true self and our ego (false self). This is important, we need this space in order to make the distinction between the two; otherwise, we become one with the ego and begin to identify as it.
Once this space is created, we automatically begin to fulfill the promise found in James 4:10 “Humble yourselves in the presence of the Lord, and He will exalt you, He will lift you up and make your lives significant.” Your presence is God’s presence, and when you spend time in meditation, basking in your own divinity, you naturally begin to transcend the false self, and you realize that it’s not the ego’s job to exalt you, but rather your own presence that brings significance to your reality.
